It didn’t.

In my previous article here I’m going in length why the class doesn’t work.

I’ll briefly explain why the official Ranger still doesn’t work in D&D 2024 and what to do if you want to actually enjoy playing a Ranger character.

Why the Official Ranger Still Fails in D&D 2024

The core problem of the Ranger has never been numbers alone. It is the identity.

In the 2024 version, the Ranger is still mechanically behind other classes in several key areas:

• It deals less damage than Fighters and Rogues
• It has weaker skill scaling than Rogues
• Its spellcasting is limited and unfocused
• Its role overlaps with other classes without excelling at any of them.

The decision to bind the Ranger’s core gameplay even more tightly to Hunter’s Mark makes the situation worse. Instead of reinforcing a class fantasy, it forces the Ranger into a narrow mechanical loop built around a single spell.

In obvious ways it is a problem of underdeveloped Pillar of D&D – Exploration.

As a result, many players realize that:

• A Fighter can be built to explore just as well
• A Rogue can outperform the Ranger as a hunter
• A Druid offers better spellcasting and survivability

The Ranger fantasy sort of exists. Alas, the official class just doesn’t support it.

What the Ranger Should Be

A Ranger should feel visibly different from other martial classes and druids. In principle, it boils down to an identity of the class – both mechanically and lore wise.

It should:

• Have a strong narrative role in the world
• Prepare for specific threats instead of relying on generic bonuses
• Adapt, evolve, and change to survive enemies others cannot

That is the design direction behind my homebrew Ranger for D&D 2024.

Ranger 2025: Class Re-Worked – A Homebrew Ranger with Identity

Ranger 2025: Class Re-Worked was created to fix the fundamental issues of the official class by giving the Ranger a clear, mechanical and narrative core.

This homebrew Ranger is built around three pillars:

1. Defender of the community – Rangers have a defined social and world role
2. Forced evolution – Rangers mutate, adapt, and transform to face impossible threats
3. Everything is a tool – Weapons, magic, and even the Ranger’s body are means to an end

Mechanically, this redesign introduces features such as:

• Outfitting, allowing Rangers to prepare specifically for certain enemy types
• Hunter State, a focused, high-impact combat mode without relying on Hunter’s Mark
• Subclasses that reinforce transformation, preparation, and adaptation instead of passive bonuses

The full class, subclasses, spell list, and lore are included in the product.

Homebrew Ranger 2024 Subclasses

I’ve designed 3 subclasses. The beloved Beast Master with animal companion that hopefully will be more on part with stronger enemies and give more flexibility. Hunter – strongly inspired by Witcher series. War Golem – my personal favourite (that’s why you can find a short story in the product), that is loosely based on Space Marines from Warhammer 40k.

• Beast Master
  A Ranger who externalizes their transformation by manifesting an inner beast. This subclass focuses on the bond between hunter and beast as two aspects of the same entity, emphasizing protection, aggression, or control depending on how the Ranger evolves.
  
• Hunter
  A pure predator archetype built around studying, harvesting, and adapting to enemies. Hunters grow stronger by learning from what they kill, shaping their evolution through trophies and preparation rather than raw power or spellcasting.
  
• War Golem
  A heavily augmented Ranger shaped by war and sacrifice. This subclass represents a Ranger who has merged armor, weapons, and ritualized enhancement into their body, becoming a living bulwark designed to hold the line against inhuman threats.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a homebrew ranger for D&D 2024 that finally delivers on the promise of the class, a redesigned approach with a strong identity is the best solution. It is also compatible with classic 5e so if you play with 20214 rules, it is good to go.

I’ve never finished it.

As I look at the major file today, it is 36 pages of text, which would probably translate to 50 or more pages in final editing. I still think there is a lot of juicy stuff in the supplement but it was always lacking in some aspects. I had some free time lately and what I realized was, my approach was wrong from the start.

DnD Supplement vs Setting

This supplement was though to be just that. A supplement. Something that you can take and use anytime in your campaign, whatever the setting. You apply the supplement, new events take place in your world and new stuff is appearing in your setting.

As much fun as it sounds, there is a few major issues with this approach:

1. When you have already build the world – you don’t want to suddenly change it.
2. If you implement it mid-game, there is almost no need for new races, classess, rules – your players are already playing the game.
3. There can be to many inconsistancies with the supplement and your world so you would need to tweak it too much.

In other words, the supplement is a neat idea for a stale game and bored DMs, who need a change. And that’s a very narrow target group. Most of DMs I know have more ideas than time to implement it.

But lately I was bold enough to think about a setting. That’s right, tbe big S!

Creating a setting give me instantly some major benefits.

1. I can fix what is broken in D&D.
2. The “supplement content” will have less conditional options.
3. It will be more coherent.
4. Bored DMs can still pick it apart but otherwise it could be use from day one.
5. Setting give me platform for creating new things within it.

Obviously the biggest issue with creating the setting is how vast of a project it is. Considering my schedule it is a lifetime work but, the good new is — it doesn’t have to be done to be playable.

Keith Baker’s DnD Setting Philosophy

I consider Eberron to be the best D&D setting. I won’t delve into specifics, but I want to talk about Keith Baker’s design philosophy. Reading his blog and his books one thing is instantly visible – he creates a world with the D&D game system in mind.

The game system informs the setting as much as the other way around.

In effect, we almost have a diegetic mechanics. Since I want to use D&D as a system but still design new setting that will be my approach as well.

Example of Diegetic Setting Design Philosophy

I will look at the piece of mechanics and think “ok, how does it fit in the world I’m building”. Here is a quick example (I’m using the new 2024 D&D version btw.)

We take Cleric class and look what it can do in first 3 levels.

• Cast spells
• Channel Divinity – Divine Spark and Turn Undead
• Diviner Order

So right there we have a lot of choices to make as a setting designer.

• How does the cleric cast a spell
• Where does the power come from – is it gods or something else
• What is channel divinity at it’s core and what it means for the world – e.g. a peron can become a vessel for a god a moment.
• Why all clerics have Turn Undead ability? What if there was a cleric of Death / Undead ?
• How picking Divine Order defines clerics in different cultures and religions – why do all of them pick one or the other.

Answering those and more questions can point you into a direction of a cleric that in the core of it’s mechanical aspects describes the world.

1. Clerics cast spells as miracles – they pray for an outcome and it comes thru. This makes it easy for people to believe in gods, however there are clerics that don’t worship any god and still cast those spells – WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
2. Channel Divinity is a opening up to specific domain that occupies a physical space throughout the planes.
3. Turn Undead is not a divine ability per se, but an aspect of Human Divinity that is hidden within all living creatures thus no matter what Subclass the cleric is, they can still use it.

As you can see, even through this example there is already a lot of ideas that can come through the mechanics. I will be using it a lot to build up this new setting.

Building my setting with you

I’m done with creating a final product and only then releasing it. It takes too much time, it is creatively cruel for someone who does all of the design, writing, art and product setup. Designing the re-worked Ranger class was super fun, but getting it published was a nightmare.

The whole process will be done right here and you will see the way I work. I already have a lot of ideas and I want to put it out there, before it becomes this huge pile of text that nobody ever sees.

Why This Matters to Me

Normally, I don’t cover D&D news, focusing instead on my own class and subclass designs. However, as a designer deeply invested in creating new and exciting options for D&D, the 2024 Player’s Handbook presents an interesting opportunity to see what Wizards of the Coast has planned. While I approach this with a keen and critical eye, evaluating the balance and creativity of these new subclasses, it provides invaluable insights that inspire and inform my own work.

It would mostly likely also mean for me to re-work some of my designs such as warlock subclasses for a new warlock and other D&D 2024 subclasses.

My Take on the Ranger Class

Upon hearing the latest updates on the 2024 Ranger class and subclasses, I’ve decided to design the entire Ranger class from scratch. My goal is to provide the Ranger with a unique identity and capabilities that distinguish it from other classes, addressing long-standing concerns and elevating its role within the game. Is it only me who enters a panic mode when all out the sudden my players say “We want to go shopping for magic items?” Now, figuring out what the vendors might have is a piece of cake, but how much it is? Now that’s a problem. So here is a little help to figure out magic item prices in 5e.

Magic item prices in 5e is a ridiculous hard thing. Oh, you have a rare item there? Is is 1000 gold, 4500 gold? Who knows… and so the search begins while the players await my decision.

Items are one of the most cool thing in D&D. It is the best loot, it can grant amazing powers and simply change the way a character works just by attuning to a mysterious object of power. The act of finding or creating a magic item, identifying it, is probably my favourite thing in D&D overall.

That’s why in this article I dive into the arcane marketplace, compare the pricing rules from Dungeon Master’s Guide (DMG) and Xanathar’s Guide to Everything (XGE) and try to figure it out once and for all. WARNING! There is a nifty calculator down belowe and you can simply use it as it is.

Magic Item Cost Calculator

I’ve prepare a simple to use calculator for magic items.

You can use it for free here from the Google Sheets. It is compatible with books, but you can easily use it to price your homebrew items as well.

You will be able to set the magic item price base on:

• Item rarity
• Type – Major or Minor
• Market Factors like Thriving economy or Competetive Market
• Reputation of the party
• Negatiotation modification
• Consumble character of the item
• Setting type

Understanding Magic Item Rarity

In D&D 5e there are five tiers of rarity for magic items:

• Common – Common magic items are relatively mundane and can be found or crafted with relative ease within the game world. These items typically provide minor benefits or enhancements to characters’ abilities without significantly altering gameplay dynamics.
  
• Uncommon – Uncommon magic items are more potent or specialized than common ones but are still relatively accessible. They might offer moderate bonuses or unique abilities that can be useful in specific situations. Characters may need to seek out skilled artisans or explore hidden locations to acquire them.
  
• Rare – Rare magic items are powerful and highly sought after. They provide substantial bonuses or unique abilities that significantly impact gameplay. Acquiring rare items often requires completing challenging quests, defeating powerful adversaries, or navigating complex dungeons. They are usually found in the possession of powerful entities or hidden in remote and dangerous locations.
  
• Very Rare – Very rare magic items are exceptionally powerful and extremely rare. They offer significant advantages or game-changing abilities that can greatly influence the course of a campaign. Obtaining very rare items typically involves undertaking epic quests, facing legendary foes, or discovering ancient artifacts hidden in the farthest reaches of the world.
  
• Legendary – Legendary magic items are the most powerful and coveted artifacts in the game world. They possess unparalleled abilities that can alter the fate of nations or reshape the fabric of reality. Legendary items are the stuff of legends, often associated with epic quests, ancient prophecies, or the deeds of legendary heroes. Acquiring a legendary item is the culmination of a character’s journey and may require confronting gods, defeating world-threatening evils, or unraveling mysteries lost to time.

Obtaining magic items

As a rule of thumb, common and uncommon items are easily bought. Rare items can be bought but there might be more at stake than just money. Very rare and legendary are best loot or an objective of a quest – however pricing might help significanlty when such items would be forged by the players as part of their journey.

Magic Item Prices 5e in the Dungeon Master’s Guide (DMG)

The Dungeon Master’s Guide (DMG) provides guidelines for magic item pricing primarily in Chapter 7: Treasure, specifically on pages 135-136. Here’s a summary of what the DMG says about magic item pricing:

The rarity of a magic item directly influences its price. Common and uncommon items are generally more affordable and readily available, while rare, very rare, and legendary items command exorbitant prices due to their scarcity and power. Players may need to expend significant resources or undertake perilous quests to acquire higher rarity items.

The prices mostly depand on rarity (which we already covered) and demant & availability.

Magic Item Prices 5e in Xanathar’s Guide to Everything (XGtE)

XGE answered a lot of questions, us DM’s had. The whole book covers a lot of interesting elements but here we want to focus on magic items prices and purchasing. Some of the subsystems from DMG are overwritten, other are supplemented.

Xanathar first introduces a mechanics on fiding the magic itemto buy altogheter. This means, that you cannot simply enter the store, but you have to actively look for it – one workweek to be precise and on top of that, spend 100 gp. Yikes! Obviously it is a optional rule.

There is also a whole complicated subsystem for finding the items but we’re not gonna delve into that. All we want here is to figure out the magic item price.

Asking prices in XGtE

XGtE approach to magic item prices are much more complex but allows you to find diversity and flexibility. In the same time they don’t offer such a wide spread that DMG gave us.

Major and Minor Magic Items

This typology was also introduced in Xanathar’s, however it wasn’t applied to prices in an explicit way. You can only see how the ‘consumable’ trait adjust the price, but I think considering the major/minor type also can naturally influence the economy of the world.

First of all type type can be applied to the number of items a vendor has. Look at the table on page 135 of Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, we see that characters on level 1-4 on avrage should have 9 minor itemst and 2 major items. It is helpful to apply this rule to stocks in magic shops so when the players visit them, there isn’t that much to buy from the major type of items. Alternativaly, their prices could be much higher, so the investmenet on part of the players is bigger as well.

Haggling, barganing and negotiating – better magic item prices in 5e

I’ve seen dozens of way to introduce haggling as a part of D&D and I believe the best one is the one that suits your players and yourself the most. Here are a few ways to do it:

1. Opposing Charisma (Persuasion) check – This give the DM adn the players a very clear view of what is going to happened and there is no space for hurtful interpretation. The dice decide.
2. Old School Role Play – Less work for you, more fun for players. If they find a clever way to approach the vendor and ask him for better price, its up to you if they succeed.
3. Mixed – Mixing the two above can be fun and allow yourself to be fair with the players. Based on the players actions you can call for a roll and maybe even change the Persuasion into Deception or Intimidation for that matter. Remember that you can use different abilities with different skills so Wizard buying a magic book can easily use Intelligence (Persuasion) check for this as well.

Magic Items Pricing 5e – Other factors

Below you can find other factors that can influence magic item prices in 5e. All of those are included in the calculator you can use yourself.

Market Factor

It describes an economy situation of the given terrirory the players are. If most of the campaign takes place in the same region, you don’t need to change it, but if the party is traveling, it might be interesting to adjust the prices as well.

I’ve introduced 5 tiers of market factors as follow:

Tier 1: Thriving Economy

• Description: The region boasts a prosperous economy with high demand for magic items and ample resources.
• Effect on Prices: Magic items are in high demand, leading to slightly higher prices compared to other regions. (+20% to base price)

Tier 2: Stable Economy

• Description: The local economy is stable, with moderate demand for magic items and reasonable availability.
• Effect on Prices: Magic item prices are relatively standard, reflecting balanced supply and demand. (No modification to base price)

Tier 3: Depressed Economy

• Description: The region’s economy is struggling, resulting in lower overall demand for luxury items like magic items.
• Effect on Prices: Magic item prices are slightly lower due to decreased demand and limited purchasing power. (-10% to base price)

Tier 4: Competitive Market

• Description: The area is characterized by fierce competition among magic item vendors, driving prices down.
• Effect on Prices: Magic item prices are lower than average as vendors compete for customers. (-20% to base price)

Tier 5: Restricted Market

• Description: The market for magic items is heavily regulated or restricted, limiting availability and increasing prices.
• Effect on Prices: Magic item prices are significantly higher due to scarcity and regulatory constraints. (+30% to base price)

Reputation

It was obvious to me to use it as a factor in the pricing method, since I use the reputation system in my games most of the time. Being friendly or admired in the city should improve the purchasing power of the characters and similarly, if they are considered a manace, people would usually be less eager to lower the prices.

You can easily applies the reputation to your Negotations, however for the sake of the calculator, that was simply easier to do.

If you don’t use any system like this, you can either ballpark it or chose the Neutral option, that doesn’t modify anything.

Negotation Modification

Considering that a lot of people use different ways to go deal with negotations, this value doesn’t use any specific mechanics but just checks and modifies the price by the factor of successful or unsuccessful negotations.

This means I simply apply:

• Successful (-10% off the asking price)
• Unsuccessfull (+10% to the asking price)
• None (Simply nothing)

If there is no attampt at all to negotatiate, just use None option. Note that Unsuccessful negotation rises the price.

Consumable

XGtE suggests a few times to cut the price of magic item by half if it is a consumable item. I use the same rule in my calculator, which turns scrolls and potions into very useful and fun items to purchase and actually use, instead of hoarding them.

Setting

Setting can influence the role and thus the price of items in major way. Low magic will make the items much more expensive and elusive, while high magic can make even rare items available for the characters in every magic store.

In the calculator I’ve used a Low Magic, High Magic and Standard typology that offers enough flexibility but without overworking the system itself.

Low magic is a setting where magic items are a rare occurance in the world and thus their price will be much higher. In High magic setting, the prices will be lower, since they are simply more common in the world. Forgetten Realms is considered here to be Standard, although you might want to adjust it to your way of playing.

• Standard Setting – no modification
• Low Magic – doubles the price
• High Magic – reduces the price by half

In some cases like Eberron, where lower level magic is very attainable but higher magic is very rare, there should be a curve on the pricing. In that case you can choose to pick High Magic setting for Common, Uncommon items; Standard for Rare; Low Magic for Very rare and Legendary.

Conclusions

Stop wasting time and use the calculator already! For real, you don’t need to browse all the books to find out how much a wand of magic missle is.

Over a year ago I’ve started to work on subclass for the worst D&D 5e class. Ranger from PHB was awful and no matter how many reddit post I’ve read about why it’s a really not that bad, I could be convinced. So the motivation on creating subclass for Ranger was an ambitious one – I wanted to create a subclass that would make me want to play Ranger.

Starting from subclasses I’ve build up a quite substantial supplement with over 28 pages of content. Here is a glimpse into table of content.

Playtesting Registration

This post is first and foremost about finding playtesters, so if you already know you want to try Nemesis Ranger before anyone else, register through the form below. You will be able to test subclasses and some player options or statblocks in encounters – or both!

Nemesis Ranger Intro

One subclass became three – but all under the umbrella of the same fantasy. A body-modified Nemesis Ranger in three variations

1. Apex – Fighter and Damage Dealer able to close the gaps fast and kill the target on the spot.
2. Behemoth – Tank and Crowd-Control with a new spin on Temporary Hit Points.
3. Thornlasher – Skirmisher and Utility option for mobile and annoying grunt running up and down the map.

Apart from three subclasses (Archetypes), I give you an option to pick from one of three spell list for this ranger. It means 9 distinctively different rangers from this one suplement.

Additionally I go in length on creating the Nemesis Ranger in your campaign or world. There are five tables and a list of questions that will help you implement the ranger in your game either as a player option or a NPC.

Nemesis Ranger Statblocks Playtesting

There is six statblocks, two for each Archetype on different CR. I start with CR3 as a decent NPC or Enemy idea and reach up to CR8. As for now, I don’t see a point to create a higher level statblocks, but hey, if that will be your feedback, we can work on that as well.

Artykuł Become a Playtester – Get Nemesis Ranger Supplement for Free pochodzi z serwisu Before You Roll.

To set things up, let me start that this is specifically designed for my table and might not work on other’s tables. Nevertheless I’ve decided to share it, since, well, it can be either useful for some in its current state, or perhaps will be a starting point to design even more thoughtful, interesting sub-system.

Here is how it looks like

Short Background aka Why I Need Those New Conditions:

1. I’m running Eberron campaign with Daelkyr manipulating emotions and using it to create new elements in the world – so thematically it seemed fitting.
2. There are new types of symbiotic weapons draining strong emotions and using them to utilize magical power
3. I needed a way to cue players on how their emotional state could change through mechanical elements of the game, but without overtaking the PC and rob the players from agency.

Emotion-Based Conditions – Design Principles

It is based on Paul Eckman’s six basic emotions: Happiness, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, Anger and Surprise. For contextual reasons and to imply slightly less the permanent characteristics of the PC, I’ve changed the language to be more suitable. I think it emphasises the current, changing state – so you might not be Happy (Permanent State) but be Cheerful for an hour (Temporary State).

Preserve the Agency. What it does – in my opinion – is more to inform player how they might feel and give them a cue, rather than changing their personality.

Double-Edged Sword. In order for those conditions to be fun, I wanted them to have potentially both positive and negative impact. It can be used by creatures on themselves, in order to gain that edge over some thread or use it entirely against someone. This also inform another design principle – interactivity.

Interactive. I really like when Conditions allow to do something more. I personally call them compound Conditions which means that they act by itself and add new layer of interactivity to it. For instance, a creature makes PC Frightened but also, when they are Frightened it can deal more damage to the PC. It creates more tension and drama (which is what you want in the game, btw).

Distinctive. A lot of Conditions in 5e D&D are very similar and, honestly, dull. As DM I still have to check what’s the difference between paralyzed, stunned, incapacitated etc. They are just so similar!

General Mechanics

The condition is over when you take a long rest or spend 1d4 hours of specific activity to end it. Some abilities can specifically limit the condition to time or other requirements.

Lesser Restoration spell and other abilities suppressing emotions works on those as well. I would recommend DMs to make decisions regarding what ends the condition having in mind two things:

1. This is not NATURAL EMOTIONAL STATE but magically induced one.
2. The emotions come from within the PC – they’re fueled by what’s inside the PC mind, soul, heart. Nevertheless it’s a cue for a player to explore the emotional aspects of the character as well as game mechanics.

It’s deliberately cute to make my female players have slightly more fun (they love cute things) and so it doesn’t overwhelm the players with new mechanics and heavy art style. Take it or leave it

Btw. If you need new conditions for you table, just create them or look for cool homebrews. Lately MCDM in their new book on Monsters introduced Dazed conditions. I’m still not sure if it’s not too broad for me, but it still has potential to be more interesting than stun, paralyze, incapacitated…YAWN.
